The Australian government has warned consumers to steer clear of ‘the little blue pill’. In a letter to the Australian consumer watchdog, Health & Safety Communications Australia (HSCA) today cautions that Viagra is the ‘the only drug that can treat erectile dysfunction and should never be considered as a medicine.’

Under the Australian Health and Safety Authority Act 2000, a doctor may “prohibit a woman from using a drug for an unapproved purpose for unprovoked or sudden sexual interest or arousal, when the drug is being used to treat the unprovoked or sudden sexual interest or arousal”.
The drug is not approved for sexual use in children, adolescents, or women.
“Viagra has been linked to a number of health risks and adverse reactions. The product, marketed under the brand name Viagra Connect, is not a medicine for treating erectile dysfunction. This product should only be used under the supervision of a medical professional,” the bill reads.
HSCA’s letter to the Australian consumer watchdog explains that Viagra Connect contains 50 mg of sildenafil citrate, which is the same ingredient as the brand-name drug Viagra. It is not the same as the medication that is approved for treating erectile dysfunction.
